Did you know that ingesting a nutrient called Choline during pregnancy could “super-charge”, for life, the brains of the Dinfant in the womb. Choline intake by adults might help the aging brain. Now, don’t go around searching for food products high in Choline. An egg, daily, should do the trick. Choline, a member of the vitamin B family is found in egg yolk, liver and other meat. Exactly the kind of stuff people avoid to keep themselves healthy. The doctor recommends a generous dosage of Choline before you tackle this week’s quota of Sudoku.

What do you prefer? Skipping breakfast, or breakfast accompanied by a Sudoku puzzle?.

Ever used mind mapping? Mind-maps have been used for centuries - for learning, brainstorming, memory, visual Ethinking, and problem solving by educators, engineers, psychologists and people in general. The idea of mind mapping is to think creatively and in a non-linear manner.
When you are accosted with a tough number puzzle which you vaguely remember to have solved sometime in the past, don’t hesitate; just try mind-mapping.

Word Puzzle

What do you think of the word ‘pleonasm’? Sound puzzling?

There’s actually such a word - the use of more words, than is necessary, is called pleonasm. Unnecessary repetition of words can be irritating to listeners.

According to Confucius: “If language is not correct, then what is said is not what is meant; if what is said is not what is meant, then what ought to be done remains undone”.

So let’s all resolve to make our speech short, crisp and brief, by avoiding pleonastic words. And what better way to start, than by solving this week’s word puzzles?

Last Week’s Solutions

Sudoku for Beginners: Puzzle # 1

Sudoku for Buffs: Puzzle # 1

Math Puzzle

Answer:
Bob saved time and took 210 minutes less than Martin. The number of seats occupied in the afternoon show was 200, while 400 were occupied in the evening show.

If it took 30 seconds per person in the queue, it took 499 * 30 =14970 seconds for Mart to reach the ticket counter.

Similarly, as there were 5 queues in the evening show, it took Bob 400/5 * 30 - 30 = 2370 seconds to reach the counter.

So it took Martin 12600 seconds or 210 more minutes to reach the counter.

Now the attendance for the shows was in the ratio 1: 2 or there were double the number of persons who went to the evening show.

If x be the number of people in the afternoon show,

then the number of persons who went to the evening show was 2x.

So we have 5x + 6 (2x) = 3400.

Or 5x + 12x = 3400. x =3400/ 17.

x = 200. so, 2x = 400.

What daily activity seems to have a great impact on how people perform, in their workplace? Eating Breakfast! WIn a recent study conducted in the United Kingdom, school children were randomly given one or four breakfasts, on four consecutive days, and then tested for cognitive skills (attention, working memory and episodic memory) throughout the morning. The breakfasts consisted of wheat cereal and milk, oat cereal and milk, a sugar-based beverage, or nothing at all. The children scored significantly better on the days following those on which they had the two cereal-based breakfasts, than when they had no breakfast at all, or only a sugar-based beverage for breakfast.

Math Puzzle

Heard of the phrase “Out of the box”? When you think out of the box, you think creatively, or in an unconventional form. The origin of this phrase can be traced back to a puzzle created by the British mathematician, Henry Earnest Dudeney. This puzzle has nine dots arranged in three rows of three dots each. The challenge is to connect all the nine dots, making use of just four lines, without taking the pencil, off the paper. You guessed it - the solution to the puzzle is “out of the box”. What about you? Are you an “out of the box” sort of person? Here’s your chance to prove it..

Riddle # 3
What should you do with a green monster?

Math Puzzle

Mart went to see a circus in the afternoon, and stood in a queue of 500. It took about 30 seconds for each person in the queue. Bob went to watch the evening show when there were 5 queues and he was the 400th person to join the queue. Who saved time and how much? The afternoon show tickets sold at $5 a ticket and the evening ones at $6. The number of seats was 600, and the total income earned by the circus was $3400. How many seats were occupied in each of the shows, given that attendance was in the ratio of 1:2?

Word Puzzle

There is no expedient, to which a man will not go, to avoid the real labor of thinking, said Thomas Edison. Making an assumption is the mark of a lazy communicator.

Much of our language is nothing more than wild generalization, and assumption. That sort of language can suck the guts, out of real communication. If people could tell you with precision, what, specifically, is bothering them, and if you can find out what they want instead, you can deal with it.

Use of vague phrases, and generalizations, results in mental fog. Need to break through that fog? Picking up new words and phrases, and using them in the appropriate place, helps. So, shall we start right away?

Logic Puzzle

Millions across the world opt for a diet, high in protein and low in carbohydrate content. This was particularly so, in the 1970’s, before saturated fat and heart disease became closely associated. In recent times, high-protein, lowcarb diets have once again become popular, due to the faster initial weight-loss they can help achieve. However, dietitians retain doubts, about the long-term health effects, of these carb-restricted weight-loss plans..

Experts say that carbohydrate is a nutrient group which is readily converted to energy. Minimizing carbohydrate intake, and only consuming diets, high in protein, can quickly lead to tiredness and fatigue. Researchers have found that carbohydrates are also good for one’s brain. A shortage of carbohydrate can cause loss of concentration, and a slow-down in reactions.

You need to concentrate hard, to solve logical puzzles. So, the next time you plan your diet, remember to include carbohydrate-rich foods. And proceed to make the logical puzzles look illogically simple!

Fortunately for you, the logic puzzles that follow don’t involve paint or brush, although they do demand an iota of grey matter…

Riddle # 5
If twenty monkeys run after one banana, what time is it?

# Word Logic

Consider the following:
A. Nobody who drives a car will try flying a plane.
B. Everybody who flies a plane will break the sound barrier.
C. Anybody who has never ridden a motorbike without wearing a helmet has never earned a speeding ticket.
D. Anybody who rides a bike without wearing a helmet will be penalized by a policeman.
E. If you haven’t got a speeding ticket, it’s only because you didn’t break the sound barrier.
Which of these conclusions logically follows from the above clues?
1. Nobody who drives cars will break the sound barrier.
2. Nobody who drives cars will get a speeding ticket.
3. Everybody who drives cars will be penalized by a policeman.
4. Everybody who drives cars will not be penalized by a policeman.
5. None of the above.

Atour bus driver was driving with a bus load of seniors down a highway. He noticed a little old lady solving a Sudoku puzzle, behind him. The driver was a Sudoku fan himself, and soon they were chatting with each other like old friends.

A little later, the little old lady tapped him on the shoulder and offered him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munched up.After about 15 minutes, she tapped him on his shoulder again and she handed him another handful of peanuts. She repeated this gesture about five more times. When she was about to hand him another batch again he asked the little old lady, “Why then don’t you eat the peanuts yourself?”

He took them inside his office, and asked his secretary to write two flight tickets and book a room in a five-star hotel. The old lady and gentleman, as could be expected, gladly accepted, and were off!

“I can’t chew them because I’ve no teeth,” she replied. The puzzled driver asks, “Why do you buy them then?” The old lady replied, “I just love the chocolate around them.”

Answer:
The dealer mixed 12 pounds of Pistachio with 12 pounds of cashew nuts.

The nut dealer mixed 12 pounds of cashew nuts at the rate of $6 with pistachio at the rate of $4 a pound to make 24 pounds of the mixture to sell at the rate of $5.

Let x be the amount of pistachios.

So we have 12 * 6 + 4x = 24 * 6.

So 4x = 144 - 72 = 72.

So x = 72/4 = 19 pounds.

So he made a mixture of 12 pounds each of cashew nuts and 19 pistachios.

Millions of people think they think, but few create anything new, for thought must be molded and correlated in a definite pattern, with continuity.

Concentration is the ability to focus upon a train of thought, to the exclusion of all else. Each day should add at least a crumb of constructive mental progress. Life and thought are akin to a kaleidoscope that brings to light, new and beautiful forms and patterns. Similarly, new shadings of thought help broaden our perspective. This is bound to elevate our minds, into new and higher planes of inspiration.

So, cheer up, and try to think of an easier way to solve your sudoku puzzle!

Math Puzzle

During the early 20th century, Henry Ernest Dudeney, one of the pioneers of mathematical puzzles, came up with the Harbadasher puzzle.

The Harbadasher puzzle is about cutting an equilateral triangle into four pieces, and rearranging it, to form a square. This puzzle was first published in 1907, in Dudeney’s book, “The Canterbury Puzzles”.

Every math problem may in fact appear to our subconscious mind,as a Harbadasher, forming a metaphorical ‘geometric pattern’.Perhaps, all you need to do is ‘read’ your subconscious, solve the ‘jigsaw’, and apply the solution, to the problem that confronts you.

Elementary, my dear Watson!

When you say that your boss is a “workaholic”, what kind of word have you used to describe him? WPortmanteau! That’s it! Workaholic is a portmanteau word.

What is portmanteau? Humpty Dumpty first uses this word to describe the word ’slithy’ to Alice in Lewis Caroll’s book “Through the looking glass, and What Alice Found There”.

‘Slithy’ is formed from two separate words and eanings, ‘lithe’ and ’slimy’. When two different words and meanings are packed in one, they are said to form a portmanteau word.

So hey! Does that make crossword a cross word, then?

New Game of The Week

H
ow’s your tolerance for puns? You’ll need some for Pass the Pigs, Ha simple game of chance built around a pig theme. Instead of dice, you roll two cute pink piglets, and you gain or lose points depending on how the critters land. For example, if both land on all fours, called a “double trotter,” you get 20 points; if they land lying opposite each other, called a “Pig Out,” you gain no points and cede your turn. There are a number of other rules as well as a variation called “Hog Call.” This would be a good travel game (the pigs, instructions, and scoring pad fit in a small, tidy box) or a fine present for someone who’s, well, into pigs!

Go hog wild with the pig-tastic game, Pass the Pigs. Players attempt to rack up points by rolling the pig dice - but if they’re not careful they might ‘Pig Out’ and lose all their points. Pass the Pigs is the sizzlin’ fun, shakin’ bacon game!

Product Features

2 pig dice, score pad, score guide, 2 pencils

Attractive plastic carrying case

Fun for all ages!

The local Sudoku club held a contest, and an old lady won.

“I know that on your pension you could never hope to have a holiday, so I am sending you to a fabulous resort at my expense.Aren’t you glad you learnt to solve Sudoku?” said the president of the club, who owned a travel agency.

He took them inside his office, and asked his secretary to write two flight tickets and book a room in a five-star hotel. The old lady and gentleman, as could be expected, gladly accepted, and were off!

About a month later, the little lady came to the travel agency.”And how did you like your holiday?” the agent asked eagerly.

“The flight was exciting, and the room was lovely,” she said. “I’ve come to thank you. But, one thing puzzled me. Who was that old guy I had to share the room with?”

Math Puzzle

Answer: Rod won 2 prizes in the first hour and won a total of 16 prizes.

Let us say the kids won y prizes in the first hour.

Then they won 4y prizes in the second hour, having a total of 5 * 4y prizes by the second hour.

After the third hour they had 20y * 5 or 100y prizes by the end of the third hour.

In the fourth hour they had 100y + 5 prizes or 130 prizes. So 100y + 5 = 205. 100y = 200. Or y = 2.

So each got 1 prize, in the first hour.

Now by the ratio we know that there are 26 parts

(2 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 8).

Rod won 8 parts out of 26 parts or 8/25 * 200 = 16 prizes.

Answer: If you know all three legends on the doors are wrong and you pick a Dancer from the “Musicians and Dancers” room, then you know that the “Musicians and Dancers” room is actually the “Dancers” room.

That said, you know that the “Musicians” and “Dancers” doors are labeled wrong. Since the “Musicians” room cannot be labeled “Dancers” (because the “Dancers” only room is actually the “Musicians and Dancers” room) it must itself be the “Musicians and Dancers” room. Finally, the “Dancers” room must be the “Musicians” only room.

Lateral thinking, a term coined by Edward de Bono, a Maltese psychologist, physician and writer, is a technique of problem Lsolving. To approach problems indirectly at diverse angles, instead of concentrating on one approach at length, is lateral thinking.

Trying harder in the same direction may not be as useful as changing direction. Thinking or talking about a familiar subject, over and over again, means following the same old neuronal path. Unless the cells are forced to find unfamiliar neurons or new parts of cells, they will stick to known paths. You exercise the same cell connections, while you are in a familiar place with familiar people, listening to known subjects. Introducing something new will enhance the properties of neural circuits, improving their processing speed. So, try a new approach, the next time you solve Sudoku… like, now!

The Psychologist William James defined attention as: “Everyone knows what attention is. It is the taking possession by the mind in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought….It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others”

Attention is a cognitive process of selectively concentrating on one thing while ignoring other things.

New Game of The Week

I
t sounds so simple: get your team to name common words without voicing a few choice Idescriptors. But could you describe a wristwatch without mentioning time, wrist, or clock? Taboo rewards those who think–and speak- -fast. The team that correctly identifies as many words as possible in a minute (measured with an hourglass timer) wins. If a member of the opposing team, armed with the blaring buzzer, catches the clue giver using any of the taboo words, a point is deducted from the group’s score. It’s a good idea to separate people who know each other well, because their familiarity can be too great an advantage. If the clue is spinach, prompting with “Mom made this every Monday” just doesn’t seem fair, though it is permissible according to the rules. Playing Taboo requires an AA battery and a sense of humor–you’ll need them both! The timer is included. Taboo is for four or more players.

Answer: The speed upstream was 3 miles per hour and the speed downstream was 6 miles per hour.

Let the speed upstream = x.

Then, the speed downstream = 2x.

Now we have 30/x + 30/2x = 15.

So (60 + 30)/2x = 15.

Or 90 = 30x.

So x = 3 = the speed upstream.

2x is the speed downstream = 6 miles per hour.

For you, Mathematics began with counting fingers. How about beginning with counting cards, the way Ken Uston did? A Mathematics genius from Harvard, with an IQ of 169, quit the Pacific Stock Exchange, to join a team counting cards. With an innovational card counting system, Ken and his team, during the 70’s and the 80’s, popularised ‘blackjack’.

Counting cards is still a sought after game. No wonder, “Million Dollar Blackjack” , authored by Ken, is still considered as a definitive book on blackjack.

Meanwhile, we folks have sudoku to count on……
